Part One. Autumn Carter's Story: The Beginning

To celebrate her 30th birthday, Autumn took a multi-day trip to Miami, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. Laughing and exploring the islands with her closest friends, Autumn soaked up the Caribbean sun without a care in the world.

Little did she know this would be the trip that would change her life forever.  In the middle of changing outfits, she noticed a subtle change. Her right breast was tender to the touch. The big C briefly crossed her mind, but she didn’t want to face that possibility.

“I tried to redirect my thoughts to a fibroid or a malignant lump, but my intuition would not budge,” says Autumn.

Unable to get rid of that nagging feeling, Autumn immediately set an appointment to have a mammogram and biopsy completed. After three nerve-wracking days, she received the news that she had been dreading. On July 26, 2019, Autumn was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer.

Things happened so quickly. One day she was going through life as a healthy 29-year-old with no symptoms or concerns and then the next, right after her 30th birthday, she learns that she has breast cancer. As you can imagine, Autumn was overwhelmed with emotions.

Autumn recalls thinking this couldn’t be real life. “I was in denial telling myself, ‘This has to be a mistake, a dream.’” But she knew she had to face reality. “I quickly accepted the truth of having breast cancer after deciding that I was not going to let cancer dictate my life or plans,” says Autumn.

The moment she accepted her diagnosis, Autumn’s denial ended and her fight began.
