Building a Community: The Courage to Be a Villager
Everyone wants a village. We talk about it often β the idea of having people around who support us, encourage us, show up when life gets heavy, and celebrate when life gets beautiful. We romanticize the idea of community. But what we donβt talk about nearly enough is the other side of that equation: being a villager.
Bad Bunny
I didnβt just watch Bad Bunnyβs Super Bowl halftime show. I felt it.
And the loudest reaction afterward (βWhy was it all in Spanish?β) proved the need for the performance. Because that question usually isnβt about understanding lyrics. Itβs about comfort. Itβs about the expectation that if Latinos want to exist in βmainstream America,β we should do it in a way thatβs easy to digest.
Bad Bunny refused. The clearest example was the way he closed: he ran through a roll call of nations, then deliberately included βUnited Statesβ and βCanada,β and capped it off with a football that read, βTogether, We Are America,β reminding viewers that America is a melting pot of nationalities that came to the U.S. in the promise of a brighter future. We are all the backbones that βMake America Great.β
How to Communicate With a Community When You Canβt Communicate With the Community
Itβs Black History Month, and instead of focusing on the past, I want to take a moment and look at the present. There was a time when communities and businesses could openly communicate about our unique cultural differences.
